QUOTES

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”~Atticus

Atticus Finch was giving advice to Scout after she comes home from school with a bad mood. The quote means that you will never fully understand someone unless you live how they live and go through what they deal with. It's not good to judge someone based on what others tell you or what you hear and see and you can't make a "prejudice" judgment on someone without knowing the facts.  The meaning of wisdom is knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action so this quote is a word of wisdom because the true measure of a person’s character does not come from their appearance.  An example of this is when Scout met Boo at the end of the story, he was nothing like she thought he would be.  He was no monster, he was just a man.

These are quotes from the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird."

"Remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it.

Atticus is telling his kids that they should never shoot a mockingbird because all it does is make music for them and causes no harm.  The mockingbird is a representation of good, innocent people being shot down or destroyed by evil.  Boo Radley, for instance, is like a mockingbird—just as mockingbirds do not harm people but only “sing their hearts out for us,” Boo does not harm anyone; instead he leaves gifts for Jem and Scout, covers Scout with a blacket during the fire, and protects the two from Bob Ewell.  Another example of a mockingbird is Tom Robinson.  Tom is accused of raping a young girl.  At the trial, Atticus Finch present hard evidence that Tom did not commit the crime but gets charged anyways, this shows a loss of innocence within the novel.  Everyone is a mockingbird until proven guilty.

She seemed glad to see me when I appeared in the kitchen, and by watching her I began to think there was some skill involved in being a girl.-Scout

I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks.~Scout

While talking Jem, Scout is basically saying that there is just one type of person in the world, just people.  Everyone is no different from one another no matter what color, ethinicity or place of origin, we are all the same on the inside.  Scout does not see people in different ranks like others in Maycomb, she sees them as equal.   People should be looked at as individuals not groups of individuals.  Aunt Alexandria for instance focuses alot on ranking.  She worrys about how others see her and her family.

"When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness sakes. But don't make a production of it. Children are children...

Atticus is talking to Uncle Jack about giving Scout and Jem a straight answer.  Kids are smarter than what people think, its a parents job to educate their child so don't tell them lies.  Children know when adults try to avoid the question and become confused and curious more than they started off.  They will find out one way or another, so it's better to tell them at the moment than to hold it off or it will become an even bigger shock later on. lying teaches children to lie it also creates unhealthy relationships.
